Notes:: On Punjabi

I wanted to elaborate a little further on Punjabi/Bhangra music............... Ive had the luxury.......... of experiencing these songs- (outside)- the context of the Bollywood films they come from. and for that---- I'm just really glad. B/c (otherwise)-- I probly wouldnt like them as much. Thats why I see (fit)- you watch with eyes closed- thats pretty much all music- but specifically/ especially that. The music- is some of the most innovative I hear out there............... really pushes the limits/and boundaries....... of what's 'Pop'. I think, if there's a 'minimalism'..... in genre........... this would be the 'maxism'....... (the counterpart).


I feel like with this genre of music, I'm hearing 2 worlds, (or,, 2 eras rather)--- collide. I feel like I'm hearing these really ancient sounds............ but updated. It's an amazing, crossroads- of old meets new. I feel like I'm hearing, something from, 1000 years ago......... today. I think that is what I love most about this 'Bhangra'/ Eastern European techno thing............ the folk side to it. -there is a folk side- that gives it so much authenticity-- doeSn't get lost in the 'experimentation'- n so forth....... as so much 'experimental'- music does. There is a strong folk side- that I hear is my 'pattern'- lately-- in all the music I love and adore. I love hearing the old meets new- this crossroads- this collision- this reaching to the past- to bring it forward (to the present). Just because it's in the past/or ancient or whatever... doesnt mean it's 'done'. And I appreciate those that keep 'tradition'- while reinventing it (so well). This is a prime example.

(first)---- (and this is thanks to Nataliya- my former zumba instructor- who I will miss dearly). She showed me 1. not only the 'way' to move, sort of 're-taught' me movement, hip/belly (specifically)- but also, introduced me/the class, to some amAzing music--- sort of the reason I got turned on to Punjabi/ and Bhangra- I owe/credit to her. She chose really obscure- sort of 'underground' music for class- really dug deep. And for that- I appreciate it. This is one of the highlights- one of our latest 'numbers'- that.... I really fell in love with the song. Watch it with eyes- closed.. (as usual). The visual will 'tarnish' the song- listen 'neutral'.


(dont open your eyes!!!!!)--- listen neUtral---- the 'movie' aspect of it (really ruins it- at least for me).

........ KT Tunstall!........... there's a funny story behind this one............... so last saturday........ (last minute)-- i decided to check out this new asian 'sweetberry' place. just, randomly...... was in a hurry n so forth...... so couldnt stay long...... but....... as i was eating my red bean crepe- this song came on....... n i was like......... like i literally dropped my fork- grabbed my phone- and 'googled'- the lyrics. ---- this is what popped up. ----- funny enough, the owners promptly turned the song about mid-way------ talk about (walking in)- the right time, at the (right place). (A belief/faith i have.......... good music will find 'you'). And I stick to that... and have to remind myself... almost everyday. Anyway--- for that I am thankful!... And i'm soooooooo glad i walked in there! N it was destiny- n Christmas Eve (too)--- n so......... a really special day it was!... I'm in love with this song i cant even tell you.......... i think it's one of the greatest songs to come a long in a while..... (n.. its not even 'new'...... i think its from 2010). Anywho- a near 'perfect'---- a damn-near 'perfect'---------------- song. Kudos, KT! I hope to see her live one day. A new appreciation has formed.

Pure 'Movement'.....

On Robyn....

Robyn- to me- is one of the best performers out there. She is (to me)- what it means to be a 'stage performer'/ 'singer'. i do not like 'robyn', per se--- in other words- i do not consider myself 'a robyn fan'...... however. I think she is an exCellent- amAZing stage performer. -She knows what it is to capture movement. She knows what it is to capture (best)- movement of a sound/sounds. -And to me -that is 'ultimate dance'-- that is (ultimately)- what dance is about. To 'accurately' capture sound. Be it, silly or whacky or... just completely 'off the cuff'--- spontaneous movement! That is the key. From the gut- 'dance/movement' from the heart. It's visceral/ it's a visceral thing. (And needs to be). That is dance to me. And Robyn- captures it best- on stage. She is an amazing performer- and if I were a performer/singer- I'd perform/sing -(just like her). I'd definitely go see her one day. The one song of her's i do like is 'dancing on my own' ...ha! It just happens, it's thAt title............ ;) ;)))







sidenotes::: I think ppl are 'too afraid'- to move/ to move like her. I think it's in them though. I think it's in (all of us). Robyn, the thing about Robyn-- she really puts her self 'out there'. She really wears her 'heart on her sleeve'- when it comes to her dance/stage performance of a song. She makes herself vulnerable (through this movement)- and the movement I think- is as tantamount to the song. In other words- WATCHing her perform it- is (as important)- as hearing that song. And that can't be said for most songs/performers. I think watching her- puts a new/different spin on it. In other words, I enjoy this song- lIVE- i enjoy SEEing her perform it- but the song itself (on its own)- i dont really enjoy that much. She 'defines' 'redefines' the song (so to speak)- through the performance of it, which she does so well. I think she is a 'brave' performer- and too many ppl are afraid to 'move'/perform- like her. tHAT is a performance. And I can't speak highly of it (enough).

Feist/dilemma/ music 'mapping'

.............. so , i just heard this song: (said above). It's this new feist song/(beck)- remix. My dilemma is.................., my 'dilemma'................................ i kInd of like it........... I dont love it- (n there fore- dont want to 'tweet' or necessarily share/post it--), but............ I do like some of the embellishments- going on in it.


I want to 'plant' it- on my 'radar'- in other words.

I need a way/ i need to find a 'way'- to do this. to plant 'kind of songs'. Songs i 'kind of like'- for one reason or a nother- but (dont love)- overall. (And dont see the point in 'sharing' them, -only other, than for myself)- its a 'radar' thing. .. how do i do this? #dilemmas #problemsolving

Sidenotes: On Twitter (my 'music map extension')

Twitter is no longer enough for me to plot my music.......................................... it (used to be). it was a way for me to (either)- quickly remind myself of something/a song i liked.............. or write a shorter blib on a thought i was having (on a song). ----N for this, it is useful. But................ I got to thinking.................. and Twitter, (nor Blogger here)--- is enough for me (anymore). I need a new/different way to be able to 'plot' my music................ to 'plant' it so to speak................... on a 'map'. --(literally). I've had this idea for a while now.................. (a 'music map')--- and I guess I need to talk to some engineers/have engineer/more IT friends. I havent the slightest clue how to 'make it'. Only concept. But.......... basically.............. it'd be a software/app......... whereby, it'd 'plot' your music- but in a more detailed way. Listing instruments, place/origin of band n so forth.............. then, on a (collective)- level. -I'm interested in seeing this data 'gathered'. So.............. over time................ we see which genres win 'out' so to speak......... in which places. I'm interested in the geography/collectivity/patterns happening in music, across/abroad... over time. This is the geek(ier)- in me.

My new Coffee Press

i'm enjoying my new coffee press. ......... it really forces you to take 'your time'. to 'cultivate' something, to 'grow' it. to 'earn it' (ultimately). it's almost like having a garden, you tend to it, (n plunge it)- and stir it, n (plunge it again)---- then................ watch it grow. (taste-- blooms). It's delicious, n rewarding! ;)

Choreography

Notes on, 'choreography'.................................................. :


I could never be a choreographer, (I decided). -For me, dance is a visceral/'gut', reaction. It's all about improv (for me)- when it comes to dance. I saw lady gaga perform on ellen today- and i saw what she did with ballet- and I thought 'I couldn't choreograph'. While I appreciate the modernization/experimentation of it, (ballet)- for me, it's a 'reaction' thing. I 'think'- in ballet- always. I could never 'choreograph', but I think i could 'co-choreograph'. I am more in the realm of technique/playing with (what's already been)---- 'choreographed'/established.

I do this in zumba, all the time...................... I experiment/play with her already, established moves. Making them more 'ballet-like'. --And it's not out of 'dissidence' -or playing 'devil's advocate'- or what not. I just................... My tendency- is towards the ballet. It's true....................... once you take a girl out of ballet....................... you can never take the 'ballet'- out of her...................... n it's so true, and still holds true (to me)- today, over 20 yrs. later. bALLET FOH EVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Guru or something or another........................................... n i felt like............................. i was listening to the fUTURe.......................... it was really weird/surreall/ sort of out of body. i couldnt believe what i was listening to/my ears.................................... it was really insane, and, xciting!.................. i cant explain it. i really do (feel)- punjabi/bhangra, is the future of 'music'. in an insane way.......................... i hear it in the future/in pop music...................... i really do, (more). Toxic (britney spears)- is sort of an example of where it's 'begun'. (Strings). but i hear more of it. it really is, on 'to' something.................................................. n i am excited, and thrilled, to see what!........................... n will (be)- following it, like a hawk.............................. it is some of the most gorgeous, detailed, complex, rhythmically, just insane............................. music. ... not much else out there, (like it)- is happening. n i can't hail it enough. to Punjabi/Bhangra...................!!!!!

....... there are elements of this song, i really love. like the intro/background noise. i like her voice (a lOT). and just... overall/some elements here and there, n a lot of places- i really like. but overall- i do not like this song, (as a whole)-it's OK. has sO much potential- could be waY better.... maybe needs a remix. but i do love that intro. some of the electronic noises-ive never heard before. very interesting sounding, sort of theatrical.

THIs............. has inspired me................... to (finally)--- start a band. ...i cant explain/or describe................ but ive wanted to for a long time.................. n now......................... after hearing this................................i hAVE to....................................... its in me, its just a matter of 'pulling' it out.............................. a 'chant-based'- sort of chant n drum band.............................. i love that---- rhythms, voices/chanting/............ drums. PJ harvey, n Tom Vek have also been 'instrumental' --in this 'inspiration'. chanting, sort of gibberish band.
