Any indie karaoke bars?? and other ramblings

ok, so i am currently searching 'indie karaoke bars'..is there any like this?? i've been wondering a long time..and 2nd, i'm wondering how i can achieve a smoker's singing voice, without smoking..ha! and 3rd, i stand corrected: i made a post awhile back about the Raveonettes and how they're growing on me, and stuff and i mean i like them and all, but turns out, the song i heard i was referring to, that i mistook for the Raveonettes, is actually a Peter Bjorn & John song..oops! ('Let's Call It Off'), which btw i am really digging and have been for awhile. just discovered who it actually was. i also just discovered their song 'the chills' yesterday..basically, well this is the 2nd time now, i heard a song, ran back to look at the satellite thingy and there it was, PB&J. yet interestingly enough, i dont like anything i've heard by them on aol radio, not yet anyway. and 4th, and lastly..what's up with all these 'ettes' bands including: The Ettes, The Raveonettes, Spinnerette etc.

And speaking of Spinnerette..

yeah so i was really excited, Roche played it again on his rotation tonite on new music mark (dc101), yay! i like to think my email had something to do w/that hehe..anyway, what i wanted to say about this song is, well gosh it seems to always go back to the beats doesnt it. but this one has a beat that especially interested me that i'd like to call the 'drop beat'. it's as tho someone's taking a piece of board or plywood and dropping it, it's like a fallen beat and it happens near the middle of the song. anyway, this is just a great almost 'perfect' song, i'd change the beats near the end after the song breaks and it picks back up..but other than that, this is like one of my newest favorite songs, go brody!
p.s.
one of the few times i discovered something exciting on FM radio..

Spinnerette lyrics

so i wanted to cast attention on the 'baptized by fire' lyrics-they're really beautiful. (yes i am still obsessed w/this song!@#$)..

Have you ever been alone?
Fighting your own war?
Someone stole the life from you
and now theyre back for more
Your heart is on the floor
Beating out of control
Oh I don't want this anymore

So I'll be sailing on
Out into bermuda blue
Compass needle breaks
Like the heart I gave to you
I've been laying down in the devils lair
Sailing into the sun I'll be baptized there

In matters of the heart
One must try to fill it up
With love and grace can start a fire
Immerse old wounds and douse them out
Pick your heart up off the floor
Hold it gently now and go
To the place you were meant to know

So I'll be sailing on
Out into bermuda blue
Compass needle breaks
Like the heart I gave to you
I've been laying down in the devils lair
Sailing into the sun I'll be baptized there

I'll be sailing on
I'm gone
I'm gone
I'll be sailing on
I'm going to the sun

So I'll be sailing on
Out into bermuda blue
Compass needle breaks
Like the heart I gave to you
I've been laying down in the devils lair
Sailing into the sun I'll be baptized there

random article just ran across

hmmm..

..i mean some of these are kind of stupid, but i've had similar ideas for artists. like for example i'd love to hear Coldplay do a metal album; like, i'd love to hear artists playing in other genres.

Tracy Bonham

so i heard 'mother mother' today on the radio, driving.. hadnt heard it in forever, and my nephews are like 'whats this??' they love hearing about the music we grew up on (me and their mom) it's so cute. anyway, i just to me, she was like the iconic 90s artist, well one of them. i miss singers like her i really do. that song is such a classic. ive actually heard some of her new stuff. the song 'something beautiful' is really good!..a definite departure from her 90s stuff, but it's good so thats ok. but ppl can go angsty again rite??

Random jibberish in my head

ookie bookie (long 'oo')

Oh!

and how could i almost forget! haha! the no doubt/sounds show last nite! they still got it..it was my 4th no doubt show, 2nd sounds. although the sounds were the 'opener opener' so they only played like a 20min. set, sad..new album so, cant wait for the real tour. paramore i could care less about, they were the actual openers. anyway, good times, we had lawn seats so kinda strange..ive always seen no doubt up close in small venues ive been fortunate enough. but still they put on a great show and just fun times all around. EVERYONE was dancing..my friend met Maja Ivarsson (the sounds) and got her to autograph a cd for me! thanks Sarah! by the time me and my other friend made it over there, they had already left, womp womp..

Speaking Of (The 'Missing')

i am in missing mode..in fact, i have been for quite awhile. like, yeah there's newer stuff by him (david garza) but what about now what is he doing now?? where'd he go? where'd tom vek go? where'd bic runga go? here is a list of those artists i am missing and wondering about most, now that i think about it..
Tom Vek
David Garza
Bic Runga
Wild Strawberries (remember that song, 'i dont wanna think about it' from like 97..)
Ace of Base (last i heard they were touring europe & a u.s. tour is in the talks yippee!)
the Cranberries (a reunion is in the talks but not anytime soon)
Jewel-i really love 'pieces of you'

ok now i realize some of them are still doin their thing, but i listened to bic's newer stuff ('Birds') and it's just not doin it for me. hmmmm tom vek is the main one right now. theres zilch. i check his forums etc. religiously. ive basically scoured the internet and still come up w/the same thing (he cont. to work on the follow-up). my patience grows thin....but i think of him often.

..so i suppose this list is a wish, of artists i hope to see come back (strong) or just come back at all..i'm sure there are more..will add as i think of them.

David Garza

soo, i am just now remembering the sounds of David Garza. just came across someone w/the last name Garza..anyway, my sister introduced me to him many years ago, i think in '98. she heard him on college radio. we were actually talking about him the other day now that i think about it. anyway, he had this song 'disco ball world' that we were obsessed with, then he kind of vanished, but i did a search and he has some new stuff that i'm really digging!..how'd i miss this!! it's from '08 apparently..yay, hopefully a new tour!?

Seal!

oh and on another note, can i just say what a great guilty pop pleasure seal's music is to me...i know..even more random..he came on the radio the other day..

like i remember being 13 or so, and 'kissed by a rose' would come on, and my sister would immediately turn it, and i'd secretly always wished she'd kept it on..

Labels:

....

this is really random, but they are they are really growing on me. which is strange..i mean i usually know from the get go whether i like a band, i mean i can sort it out instantly, most of the time..but they're ones who, i kind of liked when i first heard oh about 5yrs. ago, but now they're just growing on me it's weird..and i think this all ties in with this 'retro'/garage/surfer rock obsession i'm having. my 'musical awakening'..ha...they came on at work or something tonite and it reminded me.

ok and in other news can i just say how much i am commiserating the fact i missed the dirty projectors show..bjork was there..

More Alex Covers Please (DreamCovers extension)

which brings me to my newest list: (following the Dylan idea)
Beatle's A Day In the Life
anything Tom Vek
Lay Lady Lay (as i already mentioned)
'Disney pop'-jonas bros. etc. :0

more to come!

Labels:

Theresa Andersson-never enough

soo i was on youtube checking out some of her latest performances, and what got me is how she manages to always keep her shows fresh. like she was on kcrw performing 'birds fly away' and it was as though she were performing it for the first time (despite it being the 1 or 2 hundredth). every time i see her in any performance it's this way. you never know the trail these songs have been on, their age etc. you'd never know they'd been performed as many times as they have. her showmanship is outrageous.

and in further commemoration/bidding her farewell as she tours Europe this summer, i'll post some vids. later when vimeo is back up.

My New Fav. Remix

and on yet ANOTHER very other note, can i just say my new fav. remix is katy perry's 'waking up in vegas' by the manhattan clique. yeahyeahyeah:0

sidenote:i love love love katy perry's voice. i think she has one of the most unique in pop music right now. and i didnt think this til i saw her perform live, which wasnt too long ago. i was reading about her vocal style (contralto), apparently pretty rare among females, being the deepest female singing voice.

Labels: , , ,

Bob Dylan

and on another note..i am just now realizing, this song i've loved is a bob dylan song!..('Lay Lady Lay') never knew that was him til just now, oops..(not really a dylan fan..or maybe i am and just dont know it), but i LOVE that song.

and thinkin of it, i'd love to hear Alex cover this!:)

Labels: ,

David Byrne/Devotchka

saw the show last nite, well saturday nite..all i have to say is Byrne's set was too long and Devotchka's wasn't long enough. oh and i hear resemblances of Byrne in Tom Vek, his spoken/chanty style singing, that i just noticed last nite. but overall, a really fun show! (in really good company) and the ppl dancing around us were hysterical.

this was their wolftrap show, i love goin to that venue.
